It\u2019s usually only when policy becomes tight that it ends the economic cycle &amp; the bull market and that\u2019s a fair way off.<\/li>\n<li style=\"line-height: 2;\">Inventories are low and will need to be rebuilt which will provide a boost to production.<\/li>\n<li style=\"line-height: 2;\">Positive wealth effects from the rise in share and home prices will help boost consumer spending.<\/li>\n<li style=\"line-height: 2;\">China is likely to ease policy to boost growth.<\/li>\n<li style=\"line-height: 2;\">While business surveys are down from their highs, they remain strong and consistent with good growth.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>Global growth is likely to slow this year but to a still strong 5% with Australian growth of around 4%, despite the Omicron wave resulting in a brief setback in the March quarter.<\/p>\n<p>We have revised down our March quarter Australian GDP forecast by 1% to 0.6%, but revised up subsequent quarters by the same.<\/p>\n<h2><span id=\"four-reasons-for-optimism-regarding-coronavirus\"><span class=\"ht-heading_1\">Four reasons for optimism regarding coronavirus<\/span><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>The current situation is quite worrying. Global and Australian coronavirus cases have surged over the last month.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignright size-medium wp-image-140263 img-responsive\" src=\"https:\/\/cdn.propertyupdate.com.au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/02\/oliver-coronavirus-300x220.jpg\" alt=\"Oliver Coronavirus\" width=\"300\" height=\"220\" srcset=\"https:\/\/cdn.propertyupdate.com.au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/02\/oliver-coronavirus-300x220.jpg 300w, https:\/\/cdn.propertyupdate.com.au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/02\/oliver-coronavirus-944x692.jpg 944w, 1374w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\"\/>Australia managed the first 22 months of the pandemic highly effectively with a suppression strategy that minimised deaths and supported the economy.<\/p>\n<p>Following the further relaxation of restrictions since November, significant pressure has been placed on the health system.<\/p>\n<p>Overseas experience showed a reopening rebound in Delta cases in even highly vaccinated countries (eg, Singapore).<\/p>\n<p>And the Omicron variant arrived in late November with clear evidence it was far more transmissible than Delta.<\/p>\n<p>All at a time when much of the population has yet to have a booster shot.<\/p>\n<p>The end result looks like being another hit to the economic recovery in the current quarter as people self-regulate to avoid covid or have to isolate.<\/p>\n<p>However, each covid wave seems to be having a smaller negative economic impact.<\/p>\n<p>More fundamentally, despite the short-term uncertainty, there are four reasons for optimism regarding coronavirus:<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li style=\"line-height: 2;\">Vaccines are still providing protection against serious illness \u2013 particularly once booster shots are administered.<\/li>\n<li style=\"line-height: 2;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignright size-medium wp-image-140265 img-responsive\" src=\"https:\/\/cdn.propertyupdate.com.au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/02\/oliver-pandemic-300x220.jpg\" alt=\"Oliver Pandemic\" width=\"300\" height=\"220\" srcset=\"https:\/\/cdn.propertyupdate.com.au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/02\/oliver-pandemic-300x220.jpg 300w, 1374w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\"\/>New coronavirus treatments are on the way which will aid in the treatment of the more vulnerable.<\/li>\n<li style=\"line-height: 2;\">Omicron is more transmissible but less harmful (evident in far lower levels of hospitalisations and deaths relative to the surge in new cases compared to past waves) and so could come to dominate other variants.<\/li>\n<li style=\"line-height: 2;\">Past covid exposure is providing a degree of herd immunity.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>Combined, this could set coronavirus on the path to being endemic where we learn to \u201clive\u201d with it.<\/p>\n<p>South Africa, London, and New York are possibly already seeing signs of a peak in Omicron.<\/p>\n<p>Of course, the risk of new variants that are more transmissible &amp; more deadly remains \u2013 which is why it\u2019s in the interest of developed countries to speed up global vaccination.<\/p>\n<h2><span id=\"key-views-on-markets-for-2022\"><span class=\"ht-heading_1\">Key views on markets for 2022<\/span><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>Still solid economic growth, rising profits, and still easy monetary conditions should result in good overall investment returns.<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li style=\"line-height: 2;\">Global shares are expected to return around 8% but expect to see a rotation away from growth and tech-heavy US shares to more cyclical markets.<\/li>\n<li style=\"line-height: 2;\">Australian shares are likely to outperform, helped by leverage to the global cyclical recovery and as investors continue to search for yield in the face of near-zero deposit rates but a grossed-up dividend yield of around 5%.<\/li>\n<li style=\"line-height: 2;\">Still, very low yields &amp; a capital loss from a rise in yields are likely to again result in negative returns from bonds.<\/li>\n<li style=\"line-height: 2;\">Unlisted <a aria-describedby=\"tt\" href=\"https:\/\/propertyupdate.com.au\/glossary\/commercial-property\/\" class=\"glossaryLink\" data-cmtooltip=\"&lt;div class=glossaryItemTitle&gt;Commercial Property&lt;\/div&gt;&lt;div class=glossaryItemBody&gt;Commercial property\u00a0is any non-residential &lt;b&gt;property&lt;\/b&gt; used for commercial profit-making purposes.Commercial real is a term that covers industrial properties, retail properties (from the corner store to\u00a0shopping centres) offices and hotels.Commercial property\u00a0and residential real estate are(...)&lt;\/div&gt;\">commercial property<\/a> may see some weakness in retail and office returns, but industrial is likely to be strong.<br \/>Unlisted infrastructure is expected to see solid returns.<\/li>\n<li style=\"line-height: 2;\">Australian home price gains are likely to slow with prices falling later in the year as poor affordability, rising fixed rates, higher interest rate serviceability buffers, reduced home buyer incentives, and higher listings impact.<\/li>\n<li style=\"line-height: 2;\">Cash and bank deposits are likely to provide very poor returns, given the ultra-low cash rate of just 0.1%.<\/li>\n<li style=\"line-height: 2;\">Although the $A could fall further in response to coronavirus and Fed tightening, a rising trend is likely over the next 12 months, helped by still-strong commodity prices and a decline in the $US, probably taking it to around $US0.80.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<h2><span id=\"five-reasons-to-expect-more-volatility\"><span class=\"ht-heading_1\">Five reasons to expect more volatility<\/span><\/span><\/h2>\n<ol>\n<li style=\"line-height: 2;\">Inflation \u2013 while it\u2019s likely to moderate this year as production rises &amp; goods demand subsides it is likely to be associated with ongoing scares and the risk that it\u2019s higher for longer.<\/li>\n<li style=\"line-height: 2;\">The start of Fed and RBA rate hikes and quantitative tightening \u2013 monetary policy is unlikely to get tight enough to threaten the economic recovery and cyclical bull market, but monetary tightening could still cause volatility.<\/li>\n<li style=\"line-height: 2;\">The US mid-term elections \u2013 mid-term election years normally see below-average returns in US shares, and since 1950 have seen an average drawdown of 17%, albeit with an average 33% gain over the subsequent 12 months.<a
